Ludwig van Beethoven ...... Leonore Overture No. 3 Jordi Cervelto .... Concerto for Violin and Orchestra, Joseph Gold, violin soloist Sergei Rachmaninoff ....... Symphonic Dances, Op. 45 The Palo Alto Philharmonic brings their 28th season to a rousing conclusion with works by Beethoven, Rachmaninoff, and Jordi Cervelló. Violinist Joseph Gold, well known for his virtuosic performances of composers such as Paganini and Sarasate, will play a concerto by Cervelló, a Catalan composer (born in 1935) notable for his explorations of the complex sounds that can be created by stringed instruments. The concert also features Beethoven’s dramatic Leonora Overture No. 3 and Sergei Rachmaninoff ’s Symphonic Dances, an orchestral suite in three movements. Completed in 1940, the Dances reflect the composer’s nostalgia for the Russia he had left in 1917.
