Preparing for Rising Waters: Sea Level, Groundwater and the Bay Edge

In honor of Earth Day, the City of Palo Alto and Save Palo Alto's Groundwater are pleased to present “Planning for Rising Waters: Sea Level, Groundwater and the Bay Edge.” The keynote speaker will be Dr. Kristina Hill, Assoc. Professor, Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning and Urban Design, U.C. Berkeley. Dr. Hill is widely acclaimed as an expert on urban planning and mitigation for climate change. Sea level rise leads to groundwater level rise. Prof. Hill says, “ . . . so many properties and infrastructure elements may be affected by groundwater rise. Likely more than by seawater directly.” Dr. Hill has intriguing ideas as to how cities can adapt to sea level and groundwater level rise in a seismic zone. Her lecture should be of interest to city planners, environmentalists, developers, policy makers, property owners, residents and everyone who wonders what we can do to mitigate and adapt to the rising waters now starting to be seen in the Bay Area. What we build today will likely last 30+ years. The time to start planning and adapting to climate change is now.
