The program opens with Benjamin Britten's "Four Sea Interludes" from his opera "Peter Grimes". The Interludes are highly dramatic and impressionistic portraits of the sea that form the psychological theme of the opera. Redwood Symphony will glance back 100 years with an idyllic rendering of the American South when it presents Samuel Barber's "Knoxville: Summer of 1915". Soprano Hope Briggs will assume the voice of a young James Agee, the poet who wrote the nostalgic, dream-like evocation of a summer evening in his childhood hometown which Barber used to create a work for voice and orchestra. Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5 will conclude the evening's performance. Some of the composer's most beautiful, most sing-able melodies are found in this masterpiece, one of the favorites in the orchestral repertoire. children under 18, accompanied by an adult, are admitted free. free, ample parking, Pre-concert lecture starts at 7pm
